However, according to the International Energy Agency, maritime’s research and development spending between 2007-2019 has remained stagnant, lagging far behind other sectors. In contrast to the automotive sector, where spending on R&D increased from 67 billion USD in 2009 to 130 billion USD in 2019, maritime spent just 1.6 billion USD.
